On Tuesday April 24th the 6th grade science classes had a wonderful author speak about his book, Sooper Yooper.  Mark’s presentation was fast -paced and entertaining.  He told us how he became a writer and how he collaborated with his best friend, Mark Heckman to write a book that would help educate young people about the invasive species that threaten the Great Lakes.

Mark also showed us samples  and pictures of common aquatic invasive species and explained how they got to our Great Lakes.  We have order forms if you would like to order his book or you may find more information at his site Sooper Yooper.com

Remember:

  • Keep it simple.  This is about following the scientific method
  • Keep everything the same except one variable.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute.
  • Ask, if you have questions.  If I am busy write me a note and put it in my basket or comment on the blog

Vocabulary for Earth Science Unit #1

1.Crust – Outer layer of the earth, less than 1% of earth’s mass,Made of less dense elements like oxygen, silicon and aluminumContinental crust is less dense than oceanic crust.

2.Mantle – Layer between crust and core.  67 % of the earth’s mass, more magnesium and less aluminum and silicon than crust.  Denser than crust.

3.Core -  Below the mantle or inner layer.  33% of the earth’s mass,Mostly made of iron and small amounts of nickel.  Most dense layer.

4.Lithosphere -The solid outer layer of the earth that consists of the crust and the rigid upper part of the mantle. It is divided into many pieces which are called tectonic plates.  It is made of oceanic and continental crust.

5.Asthenosphere -The soft layer of the mantle which is flowing rock.  The tectonic plates move on this layer.

6.MesosphereThe lower part of the mantle under the Asthenosphere and above the core.

7. sea-floor spreading- the process by which new oceanic lithosphere is created at mid-ocean ridges as older materials are pulled away from the ridge

8. plate tectonics- the theory that the Earth’s lithosphere is divided into tectonic plates that move around on top of the asthenosphere.

9.divergent boundary- the boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other.

10. convergent boundary- the boundary between two colliding tectonic plates
